At Wabi-Sabi Pilates in Boulder, we focus on movement for the long term — and scapular mobility (that’s your shoulder blades not being stuck and angry) plays a big part in both.
When the shoulder blades move well, a lot of other stuff starts to work better too. Here’s why improving scapular mobility is so important:
✨ Better posture and spinal alignment
Mobile shoulder blades support your spine and help you find find better posture with having to “try”. When your shoulder blades are mobile the muscles can work more freely to support you sitting and standing more in alignment (aka less pain in the long term).
✨ Less neck, shoulder, and upper back tension
A lot of tension in these areas comes from stiffness around the shoulder blades. When they move freely, that tightness starts to transform into strength and mobility through your whole back, neck and shoulders.
✨ Stronger, more stable shoulders
Healthy movement stems from balanced strength. Helping the shoulders stay mobile helps them be more resilient, and take more load safely and with better purpose.
✨ Deeper core engagement
Your upper back and core are more connected than you might think. Better posture lets you access and activate your deep core muscles for connection and power.
✨ Improved breath capacity
A freer upper back gives your ribcage more space to expand. Typically in Pilates we do most of the ‘work’ on the exhale, so more space means bigger breaths which means a better core engagement.
Just because we don’t see them, doesn’t mean they aren’t working! Shoulder blades may seem like just something that feels tense sometimes, but finding scapular moblity is one of the fundamentals that affects nearly everything you do — in Pilates and in daily life.
